Chitosan is a natural ballast substance composed of chitin fibres isolated from crustacean shells (krill, crabs, shrimps and/or lobsters) and treated as dietary fibre intended for consumption as a weight reduction supporting product for adults, except for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Chitosan intake is especially recommended for persons who are on an improper diet with high fat content. Chitosan is a chitin derivative which displays in the body the properties of dietary fibre. It dissolves in the acid environment of the stomach, owing to which a gel forms constituting a “trap” for fat molecules. Therefore it is important for chitosan ingestion to be associated with drinking large amounts of liquid – at best water. Such action results in reduced absorption of lipid molecules in the intestines and in elevated excretion of insoluble products of binding of fat fractions with chitosan in faeces.
